Supporting Local in Every Way--St. John Glass

St. John Glass

Why Bellingham? Why NOT Bellingham!?

Favorite Shop Downtown? My wife Michelle's store Heroine for sure. I built the interior and the dressing rooms. It's beautiful. I'm really proud of the way it turned out. But...that seems a little biased. I would have to say Clarks Pet Supply. I love my dogs and they seem to love them as much as I do.

Home renovation projects can be stressful. Whether they are for cosmetic purposes or due to some unforeseen accident, the thought of having to have something seemingly major happen to your home can make anyone lose a night or two of sleep. That's why it is so refreshing to have a business in town that not only has been the experts in their field for over 70 years, but a local company you know you can trust to come into your home and get the job done. That company? St. John Glass, a glass installation company who has served Bellingham for over seventy years who are the leading experts in Whatcom, Skagit, and Island counties.

Opening in 1945, St. John Glass has only switched hands three times during its operation, with current owner Newt Bouma taking the reins in 2013 from previous owner John Faber. "I worked for John for over 10 years, working my way up through installers, salesmen, and finally management," said Newt. "John offered me the company when he retired in 2013 and with the support of my wife, I accepted. I am committed to maintaining the company's high standards and strong reputation for quality."

That quality can be seen in everything St. John Glass and Newt does, whether its shower installations, deck railings, or building the interior of downtown boutique Heroine. When asked about what types of projects Newt prefers, he said that he loves a challenge. "I prefer the custom, high end projects," he answered. "When a customer calls and says 'I've shopped around and everyone says this is impossible' that's where I step in! I like to find creative ways to do things that have never been done before."

Not only is Newt committed to his work, but to the downtown core. Newt's wife Michelle is the owner of Heroine and Mi Shoes, and has been a downtowner for over 10 years. "Michelle and I live, work, and play downtown. There is always something to do." They go above and beyond, as Michelle sits on our Board of Directors. "DBP is so vital to downtown. I don't think people realize what goes into keeping the downtown looking so nice and organizing all of the events that make Bellingham come alive (Art Walk, Downtown Sounds, Wine Walk....)," said Newt. "Bellingham culture wouldn't be the same without DBP. I'm sure of that."

The Downtown Bellingham Partnership is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, and without the support of our wonderful community, we would not be here. It is through generous donations from supporters like St. John Glass that allow for us to keep doing our work and serving you.
