PARK(ING) DAY – 12-6pm 9.16.16 an annual open-source global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public places. The project began in 2005 when Rebar, a San Francisco art and design studio, converted a single metered parking space into a temporary public park in downtown San Francisco. Since 2005, PARK(ing) Day has evolved into a global movement, with organizations and individuals (operating independently of Rebar but following an established set of guidelines) creating new forms of temporary public space in urban contexts around the world.

This year, in Bellingham, Washington, we will be hosting PARK(ing) Day on the roof of the Commercial Street Parking Garage (1300 Commercial Street). Download the application here and send to or drop it off at our office at 1310 Commercial St. Deadline: 8/26/16 at 5PM

How it works:

1. Download an application. Fill out the appropriate fields and send to:

dylan@downtownbellingham or

Downtown Bellingham Partnership

1310 Commercial St

Bellingham, Washington

2. If your application is accepted, you will be assigned a parking space on the roof of the Commercial St Parking Garage that will be yours to decorate!

3. The event will be from 11am-8pm – arrive at 11am to set up and have everything cleared out by 8pm.

4. Some inspiration from other cities include:

  • A free neck and head massage
  • An ecology center
  • An outdoor classroom
  • A mini dog park
  • A croquet tournament
  • A dinner party
  • A chicken coop
  • A wedding ceremony

For more information on the international event, visit the site here. Also, feel free to download and read their content. Remember, not all of their rules and guidelines apply to the Bellingham PARK(ing) Day event since we will be utilizing parking space on the roof of the Parking Garage only.

  1. Can we use more than one space?

YES. If you plan on using more than space, simply fill out the necessary amount of application pages (page 2 is the section where you draw out your park plan).
  2. How long can my park stay up?

From 11am until roughly 7pm. The Parking Garage roof must be cleared out by 8pm, and after that we can all run downstairs and hang out at the Commercial Street Night Market!
  3. Can we bring grass, plants, etc.?

Absolutely. However, before laying down sod or loose soils, a tarp must be laid down to eliminate mess.
  4. Is it possible to vend or sell goods?

All vending and sales are prohibited. Luckily, the Night Market is taking place later in the evening, where all of the vendor opportunities can be experienced!
  5. Is food/drink allowed in my park?

Of course. No alcoholic beverages, but soda, water, melted snow, and all of that goodness is allowed.
  6. How much is it to apply?

  7. What is PARK(ing) Day?

PARK(ing) Day is an annual, worldwide event where artists, activists, and citizens independently (but simultaneously) turn metered parking spots into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public parks and other spaces for people to enjoy. PARK(ing) Day is a non-commercial project, intended to promote creativity, civic engagement, critical thinking, unscripted social interactions, generosity and play.
  8. How can I let my friends and family know what I’m doing?

Share your plans with family and friends and encourage them to create their own park! On the day of the event, show off your park with updates to Facebook, Instagram or Twitter (#ParkingDayBham – tag us at @downtownbham).
