Deb Talan

  • Mount Baker Theatre 104 North Commercial Street Bellingham, WA, 98225 United States (map)

Deb Talan has been writing songs since she was 14 years old. Talan learned to play the clarinet, wrote songs on piano, and later taught herself to play guitar in college. Talan was obsessed with Shawn Colvin and became a vegetarian for four years (which ended with a hotdog and a swim in lake Michigan).

Talan started a band named Hummingfish in Portland, OR with her friend Mark. Together, they wrote a lot of fun songs that people danced to “until they were all sweaty in that hipster/grungy/geeky Northwest kind of way.” Talan moved back to the east coast six years (and a divorce) later, and began playing solo in Boston coffee houses, opened shows for Catie Curtis, and met up with Steve Tannen and formed The Weepies. The band played shows all over the country and the world. Talan moved to LA, married Steve, made five records and three amazing boy-children, and had songs placed in loads of movies and tv shows.

Later on, Talan moved to Iowa, got breast cancer, received chemotherapy treatment, recovered from breast cancer, made a solo album, struggled with mental health issues and relationship issues for six years, and divorced Steve.

Talan has a lot she could say these days, instead she plays songs for people. Music heals, and songs can be prayers.
