Travelogue: Winter Wildlife of Northern Japan

  • Whatcom Museum - Old City Hall 121 Prospect Street Bellingham, WA, 98225 United States (map)

Join Bellingham Parks & Recreation for a free presentation with guest speaker Greg Green in the Rotunda Room of Old City Hall.

Take a virtual trip with wildlife ecologist and nature photographer Greg Green as he travels to frozen Japan to photograph Japanese snow macaques bathing and grooming in the hot springs of Honshu and then on to Hokkaido Island where he photographed flights of Japanese Red-crowned Cranes coming in to feed in the mornings, Red Foxes slinking around for mice, Ezo Sika Deer bulls lying about the ocean edge, Blakiston’s Owls catching fish at 3 am and -3 degrees, Whooper Swans concentrating in the warm springs along Lake Kussharo, and Steller and White-tailed Sea Eagles hunting the sea ice packs off shore of Rausu. Japan is truly a land of fire with numerous hot springs called onsens that both humans and wildlife have exploited for thousands of years.

Greg’s presentation will also include a visit to the markets of Tokyo, a detailed discussion of the incredible foods eaten along the way, and the thrill of traveling at 200 mph in a bullet train.
